The surface finish is the metal coating applied to a PCB's copper pads to protect them from oxidation and ensure reliable soldering. It sounds like a small detail, but the wrong choice can cause poor solder joints, flatness problems or unexpected cost. Here are the four finishes we handle most often, and when each one makes sense.
HASL (Hot Air Solder Leveling) — The Budget Workhorse
HASL dips the board in molten solder and blows off the excess with hot air. It is the lowest-cost option and very robust, available in leaded and lead-free (HASL-LF) versions.
- Best for: simple 2–4 layer boards, LED strips, power supplies, cost-sensitive products.
- Watch out: uneven surface — not ideal for fine-pitch BGA or 0.4 mm pitch components, and the thermal shock is unsuitable for very thin boards.
- Shelf life: about 12 months.
ENIG (Electroless Nickel Immersion Gold) — The Premium Standard
ENIG coats pads with nickel covered by a thin gold layer. It produces a perfectly flat, oxidation-resistant surface, which is why it dominates high-end assembly.
- Best for: BGA/QFN packages, HDI boards, 6+ layer boards, gold-finger contacts, anything requiring wire bonding.
- Watch out: roughly 20–40% more expensive than HASL; "black pad" risk exists with poor-process suppliers — another reason to vet your PCB partner.
- Shelf life: 12 months or more.
OSP (Organic Solderability Preservative) — The Flat and Cheap Middle Ground
OSP is an organic film applied over the copper. It is flat like ENIG and cheaper, but more fragile.
- Best for: high-volume consumer boards assembled within weeks, SMT-only designs.
- Watch out: short shelf life (3–6 months), sensitive to multiple reflow cycles, and invisible to the eye (hard to inspect pad coverage).
Immersion Silver / Immersion Tin — The Specialists
Immersion silver offers excellent solderability and flatness at moderate cost, popular in automotive and RF applications, though it tarnishes and needs sulfur-free packaging. Immersion tin is a good lead-free choice for press-fit connections but should not be reflowed twice.
Quick Decision Guide
- Cost-driven, simple board → HASL-LF
- BGA / fine pitch / high reliability → ENIG
- Mass consumer product, quick turnaround → OSP
- RF / automotive → Immersion Silver
